Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis has hinted that the club may cash in on forward Max Clayton if he sticks to his position of not signing a new contract at Gresty Road.
The talented 18-year-old has been tipped to follow former Crewe star Nick Powell to a Premier League club, with the local press having linked Clayton with both Arsenal and Liverpool.
Powell left last summer for Manchester United after helping Crewe into English football’s third tier, leaving Clayton as the next big hope for the Alex.
The forward has continued to show impressive sparks of talent which have had Premier League scouts heading to Gresty Road, but a worrying situation is developing for Crewe, with the youngster having refused the opportunity to sign a new contract.
Crewe boss Davis has promised to try to persuade Clayton once again, but gave a clear hint that the club would not allow the forward to run his contract down, which ends in 2015.

"I will sit down with him again", Davis explained to the Crewe Chronicle.
"We spoke several months ago to try and do something but he didn’t want to.
"We don’t want a situation when his contract is coming to an end."
And the Crewe boss insisted he is motivated by Clayton’s best interests.
"I wouldn’t like to think he would go somewhere else in a hurry when he isn’t ready", said Davis.
"We want him to be a regular in our team and scoring goals, we want the best for Max."
Clayton has made 23 appearances for Crewe in League One so far this season.
