The starting gun has been fired on the race for Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski after the German club’s sporting director Michael Zorc confirmed that the Poland international will not be extending his contract.

Lewandowski’s current deal at Dortmund expires in the summer of 2014, leaving Dortmund with a big decision to make at the end of this season.

Zorc has hinted though that they may well be predisposed to keeping Lewandowski to the end of his deal, despite the fact that it could cost them up to €30M in a lost transfer fee.

"Robert is not extending his contract, so that means that he is leaving us at the very latest at the end of his contract in 2014", Zorc told Sky Deutschland before Dortmund lost 1-0 to Bayern Munich in the German Cup last night.
