Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson feels that Cristiano Ronaldo is unlikely to return to the Red Devils.

Ronaldo returns to Old Trafford tomorrow (betting preview here) for the second leg of Real Madrid’s Champions League Round of 16 tie against Manchester United, with the scores locked level at 1-1.

At various points this season the Portuguese has been reported as unhappy at Real Madrid and it has been speculated that he could make a move back to Manchester United, the club he left in the summer of 2009.

Ferguson though does not want to raise hopes of that happening amongst the Old Trafford faithful.

"I don’t think there’s anything as far as I’m aware to encourage me that he’d come back here", he told his club’s official site.

"I don’t think there’s anything in that at all.

"I think he’s got two years left on his contract and it could be a lot to do with the fact that negotiations are ongoing for a new contract.

"But it’s false hope [for anybody expecting Ronaldo to return]."

Ronaldo started Real Madrid’s weekend Clasico victory against Barcelona – Los Blancos won 2-1 – on the bench, with Jose Mourinho keen to save him to shoot down Ferguson’s men.

The Champions League is Real Madrid’s overriding priority this season.
