Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has revealed that a refocused winning mentality from the Red Devils post-Christmas is the secret behind their Premier League title success.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s men have notched up 11 victories from 12 games in the league post-Christmas this season. Their only defeat came in the Manchester derby earlier this month.

“After Christmas it settles down, we refocus again after Christmas. You start that run towards home and your mindset changes almost without you realising it”, the 31-year-old told United Review.

“At the start of the season you have to be ready and focused, but there’s something in the air here when you turn for that finish line; it’s part of the mentality.

“You can’t lose too many games or drop too many points, but when you swing around past Christmas every game seems to get bigger and bigger. We relish that.”

Manchester United have recorded nine clean sheets this year so far and that has been crucial for the Red Devils to open up a 13-point gap between themselves and second-placed Manchester City.

Carrick and his team-mates will be looking to get their hands on a 20th league title with a win against Aston Villa tonight at Old Trafford.
