Aston Villa skipper Ron Vlaar is looking for positives after his team’s 3-0 thrashing at the hands of newly-crowned Premier League champions Manchester United.

The defeat leaves the Midlands giants just three points clear of the drop zone. They will be hoping to progress further up in the Premier League table with a good result against Sunderland in a crucial survival showdown, next Monday.

"The second half was a lot better. We had better positions, we didn’t lose possession and kept the spaces a lot smaller. It was more difficult for them”, the Dutch centre-back told his club’s official site.

The 28-year-old is drawing inspiration from Aston Villa’s second half display at Old Trafford and feels it is an improvement on earlier in the campaign.

"We have to go on with the way we played in the second half.

"We all know what happened at Chelsea [an 8-0 defeat, ed.] and it didn’t happen this time. Some people expected it but it’s a positive improvement”, Vlaar added.

Paul Lambert’s men start off their four-game end of season run-in with a clash against the Black Cats, who lead Aston Villa by three points.
