Former Republic of Ireland defender Paul McGrath believes Rio Ferdinand is a winner and would love to see the English centre-back receive a contract extension at Manchester United.

The 34-year-old stopper put pen to paper at Old Trafford in the summer of 2002. Since then, he has helped the Red Devils bag six Premier League titles. The former club skipper’s contract, however, expires this summer.

"I would love to see him getting another contract because I think it’s in his blood that he’s got that winning mentality”, McGrath, a former Manchester United player, told BBC Red Wednesday.

"He loves the club, you can see that in the way he plays, he doesn’t like getting beat and he’s screaming at people who make mistakes; those people are winners in football and Rio is one of them."

The former Leeds United defender pulled out of the England squad last month citing an “intricate pre-planned programme” concerning his training and fitness.

However, McGrath believes that Ferdinand is well aware of his body and fitness, and knows that he is focused on giving his all whenever he steps onto the pitch.

"He knows his own body, he knows what he can and can’t do and the great thing is that when he walks on the pitch on a Saturday you are getting the performances you want at the moment."
