Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has stressed that his club will remain competitive in the upcoming summer transfer window despite their relative inability to match the vast resources of clubs like Chelsea and Manchester City.

The Red Devils has silenced critics who had believed them unable to compete financially by making a sensational swoop for prolific striker Robin van Persie last summer. Since his high-profile £24M move from Arsenal, the Dutch international has been the Scotsman’s trump card in the race for the Premier League title.

And Ferguson insists he can do it again once the market re-opens, telling his club’s oficial site, "We’re competitive in the market – we’re not Chelsea or Manchester City in terms of money but we’re competitive."

The statement from the long-time Red Devils boss will prove tantalising for the club’s fans, who will now eagerly await the announcement of Ferguson’s transfer targets. And despite not mentioning any specific names, the Scottish tactician has confirmed they have already started discussions with the relevant people.
