English Football Association chairman David Bernstein believes that Sir Alex Ferguson is "genuinely" one of the best managers of all time.

The FA chairman’s statements come after the 71-year-old Scotsman announced his decision to step down as Manchester United boss and retire from football management at the season’s end.

Ferguson has been a core fixture in the Red Devils dugout in the past 26 years – players and fans alike will certainly feel awkward at the very least not to see him there next season.

His insatiable hunger for victory has seen an era of success at Old Trafford, where the club has won a total 38 trophies during the Scotsman’s reign.

“Sir Alex Ferguson’s achievements are truly remarkable – he is genuinely one of the greatest managers of all time and certainly of the modern era", Bernstein told the FA’s official site.

“His contribution to English football has been outstanding in every regard and, in The FA’s 150th year, it is something that should be celebrated.

“On behalf of The FA I’d like to wish him a happy and healthy retirement", the chairman concluded.
