Outgoing Bayern Munich head coach Jupp Heynckes has admitted that his last league game against Borussia Monchengladbach was "an emotional moment".

The new Bundesliga champions were caught napping in the first five minutes of their game against the Foals at Borussia Park with Martin Stranzl and Mike Hanke scoring in a span of a minute to put Lucien Favre’s side 2-0 up in blitz fashion.

Spanish international Javi Martinez grabbed one back for the visitors, but Havard Nordveit managed to restore Gladbach’s two-goal lead three minutes later. French international Franck Ribery decided to join the party in the 18th minute, to make sure Bayern Munich did not have a mountain to climb come half-time.

But while the first half saw that it could be anybody’s ball game, with five goals score in less than 20 minutes, Bayern Munich struck back and showed why they are champions during the second half – with goals from Ribery and Dutchman Arjen Robben sealing the come-from-behind 4-3 win.

"This is an emotional day for me", Heynckes told Die Welt. "I started my playing career as well as coaching career here [at Borussia Monchengladbach]."

Savouring the adulation of the fans from both teams, Heynckes could not help but shed a tear and said, "I want to thank the fans. They have given me a wonderful send off. This just shows that this is my home."

Heynckes’ contract with Bayern Munich is set to expire at the end of the season, with ex-Barcelona head coach Pep Guardiola in line to replace him.

It is believed that Heyneckes will announce his final decision on his retirement after Bayern Munich’s German Cup final match against Stuttgart in Berlin two weeks from now.
