Unsettled Manchester United first team coach Rene Meulensteen could well be playing a more prominent role at a different club next season, with recently-relegated side Wigan Athletic in negotiations with the 49-year-old Dutchman for him to become their new manager, according to Dutch daily De Telegraaf.

The decision of new boss David Moyes to revamp the Manchester United heirarchy by dismissing assistant manager Mike Phelan and goalkeeping coach Eric Steele did not dwell kindly on Meulensteen, who immediately thought about leaving the club after his colleagues’ departure.

With the Dutchman set to leave Old Trafford after a productive six-year stint, Meulensteen is now being courted by Wigan as a potential successor to Roberto Martinez, who confirmed his exit from the DW Stadium recently.

With the Red Devils’ winning backroom staff slowly but surely crumbling down, it will be a challenge for Moyes to hold on to the talented Meulensteen, whose contract with the club will expire come the end of next season.

Apart from his time at Manchester United, Meulensteen also held roles at Qatari sides Al-Ittihad (now named Al-Gharafa) and Al-Sadd as well at the Qatar Under-18 national team.

Meulensteen’s playing career saw him spend stints as a midfielder in teams in the Dutch lower leagues, having retired from professional football at the age of 29.
