Mario Gomez’s future appears destined to be at Napoli even as manager Rafael Benitez prefers the services of Manchester City outcast Edin Dzeko, according to Italian daily Tuttosport.

A €20m deal is believed to have been agreed in principle for the Bayern Munich forward, who has been touted as a replacement for Edinson Cavani.

Cavani is almost certainly on his way out of Naples after president Aurelio De Laurentiis confirmed yesterday the Serie A club had received bids.

Benitez is believed to be in favour of signing up Dzeko, who was used primarily as a substitute this season under Roberto Mancini.

The player’s frustrations at Manchester City saw interest generated from Arsenal, thanks also in part to his 14 league goals.

The deal for Gomez is expected to be completed soon, with a three-year contract reportedly used to tempt him away from the Allianz Arena, where he has largely played a peripheral role this season.

Gomez arrived in Bavaria in 2009, and while he has enjoyed a prolific four-year spell so far, scoring 113 goals in 174 games, injury restricted his tally this season.

He came on as a very late substitute in the Champions League final victory over Borussia Dortmund, but made his mark with two goals in the 3-2 DFB Pokal final win against former club Stuttgart.
