Bayer Leverkusen have surged firmly to the front of the race to sign Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld, the player’s father has revealed.

Flush with cash after the sale of Andre Schurrle to Chelsea, the Bundesliga side are bidding to make Alderweireld their second signing in quick succession after snapping up Son Heung-Min from Hamburg earlier this week.

Alderweireld has just one year left on his contract at current club Ajax and looks set to leave the Amsterdam ArenA.

And despite being strongly linked with Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle and even Arsenal, his father Vic Alderweireld puts Leverkusen in the driving seat.

"Bayer Leverkusen are the club with which we have already held the most significant talks", he told Belgian daily Gazet van Antwerpen.

"We will move quickly with the club once we’re at the table again."

Leverkusen have Champions League football to offer Alderweireld for next season, but the club’s president has stressed more talks are needed to snare the centre-back and provide him with Europe’s top tier competition at the BayArena.

"We need to have more conversations to complete the transfer", said Wolfgang Holzhauser.
