A switch to Monaco has emerged as a possible option for Benfica midfielder Nemanja Matic after officials from the French club visited Portugal for discussions with the Lisbon side’s president Luis Felipe Vieira.

According to Portuguese daily Correio da Manha, Monaco have made Benfica aware of the fact that they would like to sign the Serbian this summer.

Matic, who joined Benfica from Chelsea, with the Europa League winners also holding an interest in their former player, has a buy-out clause set at €50m at the Estadio da Luz.

And Benfica are determined that it should be stuck to, with the player not departing for a penny less.

However, there may still be movement, with Monaco flush with cash and Matic’s agent none other than Jorge Mendes, who has successfully negotiated for three of his clients to join Claudio Ranieri’s men this summer: Radamel Falcao, Joao Moutinho and James Rodriguez.

Negotiations between the two clubs are set to continue this week.

It remains to be seen if Chelsea will make a move to solidify their Matic interest.
