Russia national team coach Fabio Capello’s proposed move to Paris Saint-Germain has stalled with the Italian’s son revealing no negotiations were in progress despite a lengthy meeting with the club’s sporting director Leonardo.

Reports on Wednesday had indicated that Pierfilippo Capello had been engaged in discussions with Leonardo in Paris – tipped widely as the precursor to Capello senior moving to PSG.

It would have paved the way for current PSG coach Carlo Ancelotti to leave for Real Madrid, who are keen to have him, but it is understood talks did not revolve around Fabio Capello at all.

Pierfilippo Capello, who acts as his father’s agent as well, was quoted in L’Equipe as saying: "It was a long meeting with Leonardo.

"We’ve known each other for 15 years and we’re friends. We did not talk about anything other than players and other things. We have not even started to negotiate for Capello."

While the last sentence may imply that the move is still a possibility, the Russian Football Union were quick to put out a statement yesterday revealing a firm stance on Capello’s contract, which still has a year left.

The statement read: "In connection with the news emerging today, in numerous media reports, of a possible shift for the national coach of the Russian national football team Fabio Capello to Paris Saint-Germain, the Russian Football Union has officially stated that the current coach has a contract with the RFU.

"[The contract] is calculated [until] before the end of the final stage of the World Cup 2014 to be held in Brazil.

"RFU is satisfied with Capello’s work as the head coach of the national team, and this is based on the fact that the Italian specialist will fulfil his contract until it is completed. All terms and conditions of the contract will be carried out."

The short-term nature of PSG’s proffered contract is given as a key factor in a possible rejection from Capello, similar to the reasons for refusals from other high-profile managers from around Europe.

Yesterday, the RFU’s former chief Vyacheslav Koloskov had claimed he would "lose respect" for Capello if the Italian broke his contract and moved to PSG.
