Shakhtar Donetsk have confirmed they plan to fine Henrikh Mkhitaryan after he failed to report for pre-season training amid talk of substantial interest from Liverpool.

The English giants have been linked with bidding £20m to activate Mkhitaryan’s release clause and the attacking midfielder is known to be keen on a possible switch to Anfield.

However, Shakhtar Donetsk insist that they have had no offer from Liverpool for the Armenian and that furthermore Mkhitaryan has not informed them that he wishes to quit the Donbass Arena.

The situation is rapidly becoming messy and Mkhitaryan is set to be fined.

"He has not turned up for training", Shakhtar Donetsk director Sergei Palkin was quoted as saying by Voetbal Primeur.

"Mkhitaryan can expect a fine", he added.

"We do not know whether he intends to return in the short term."

Palkin also spoke about talk of Liverpool wanting the player.

"Liverpool have not been in touch with us. Mkhitaryan has also not told us that he wants to leave.

"From our point of view these are just rumours."

Mkhitaryan’s situation is further complicated by the fact that some of his rights are owned by a third party.
