Paris Saint-Germain have at last made certain of Laurent Blanc’s appointment as their coach on a two-year deal, with the added task of ensuring more trophies for the league winners.

PSG’s search for Carlo Ancelotti’s replacement had taken them across a long list of high-profile managers in Europe, with Blanc emerging victorious today.

A year on after leaving the post of France coach, Blanc has been signed by PSG on a one-year deal with the option of an additional year, and a press conference is expected "shortly".

It means World-Cup-winning player Blanc will be expected to at least maintain PSG’s recently-acquired taste for silverware, with the club having won the Ligue 1 title comfortably last season.

A statement issued by PSG read: "Laurent Blanc is one of the sports’ most decorated players and has played in the most prestigious stadiums in Europe and across the globe.

"A championship winner in France and England, Blanc also won a Spanish Super Cup and the Coupe de France during a career in which he played alongside the very best in the world.

"The Board of Paris Saint-Germain has given Laurent Blanc the mission to build on last season and to continue the club’s ascendency towards the summits of the European game."

Whilst his rivals for the PSG job were dismayed by the short-term nature of the contract, causing them to reject it, Blanc, who led Bordeaux to the Ligue 1 title in 2009 as manager, appears to have no such problems.

His appointment had also paved the way for incumbent Ancelotti to move to Real Madrid, announced today as well, ending a protracted saga that began long before Jose Mourinho’s exit from Spain was announced.
