Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld has explained that he is waiting for "other clubs" to make an offer for his services, after rejecting the chance to join Norwich City.

The Canaries managed to agree a fee with Ajax for the Belgian centre-back, but ran into a brick wall when discussing the move with Alderweireld, who clearly has bigger clubs on his mind.

The defender, who is out of contract at Ajax next summer, has already spoken to Bayer Leverkusen about a switch, but was unable to find an agreement with the German side either, while the Bundesliga outfit could also not strike a deal with Frank de Boer’s men.

Liverpool have been strongly linked with Alderweireld, while at points over the last 12 months Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle have also been credited with holding an admiration for the player.

And Alderweireld is prepared to sit tight for now.

"Norwich have big ambitions, but I have other clubs in my mind", the Belgium international was quoted as saying by Voetbal Primeur, after Ajax played RKC Waalwijk.

"And if that does not happen, then I will just stay at Ajax. This would not be a punishment for me."

Alderweireld also feels that the Norwich episode has served a good purpose – letting clubs know how much he can be bought for.

"Now the clubs know what I cost", he said, with the Canaries having offered around €8m to the Eredivisie champions.
