Chelsea have let it be known that they want to sign Gonzalo Higuain from Real Madrid this summer, according to Spanish daily AS.

Higuain is at the centre of a tug-of-war in the current transfer window, with Arsenal keen to take him to the Emirates Stadium, Napoli considering the striker as an Edinson Cavani replacement and new Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti wanting the player to continue at the Bernabeu.

Where Higuain will end up remains to be seen, but Chelsea are believed to have informed Real Madrid and the striker himself of their desire to sign him.

The Blues have recently seen a bid for Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney turned down and Jose Mourinho has money to spend this summer, but Los Blancos want a hefty €40m for Higuain.

The Portuguese knows Higuain well from his time in charge of Real Madrid and could use his personal connection to tempt the Argentina international to Stamford Bridge.

Higuain is understood to be unhappy with Real Madrid on two fronts.

Firstly, the striker feels he has not had enough playing time at the club, with last season a case in point.

And the second point the player is dissatisfied with is his contract at the Bernabeu, which he believes is the subject of a broken promise to improve its terms.
