Keisuke Honda’s transfer saga is has taken a fresh twist with CSKA Moscow general manager Roman Babaev insisting AC Milan need to up their financial game if the player is valued as a real target.

Honda’s contract with CSKA expires in December and Milan were hoping to secure him after that period, with the player himself admitting his desire for the move.

A transfer this summer will, of course, require financial impetus from Milan’s end, and CSKA are keen to reap as much benefit from the sale as allowed by the fiscal rules that govern European football.

And the flip side is that CSKA have warned Milan to expect no leeway in the transfer details, as Babaev revealed the player was subject to many other offers.

"Milan know our position, and know what we want", Babaev was quoted by Gazzetta dello Sport as saying. "If they want Honda, they must comply with the laws of the market.

"They must not presume that just because they are AC Milan we are ready to send the player over for free. Honda is liked by many English clubs, and their offers were double of that which Milan are ready to give.

"The player wants to go to AC Milan and we are ready to satisfy him, but without any discounts. He knows that in the market there are rules, and that nothing will be given away for free."

Manchester United have been one of the clubs reportedly in the mix for Honda, who has spent the last three-and-a-half years with the Russian champions.

He played in the recent Confederations Cup for Japan, while his time with CSKA has seen him notch 104 games so far.
