Spartak Moscow have begun negotiations with Ajax over Liverpool-admired Toby Alderweireld for a reported €7m move, but things could stumble over salary demands.

According to Russian daily Sport-Express, Alderweireld is open to joining Spartak – despite earlier reports about him having no desire to play in Russia.

Yesterday saw the centre-back admit there was an offer in place from Spartak, adding that an agreement between the clubs would force him to consider the possibility.

"I have always said that I will look seriously at every option and I won't say no in advance, but certainly also not yes", Alderweireld had said.

A move for Alderweireld is becoming somewhat of a necessity for Spartak, especially as centre-back Nicolas Pareja went out on loan to Sevilla this summer with a buying option attached.

However, all may not be proceeding as smoothly as expected, with Alderweireld reportedly demanding a €3m annual salary.

This could be a huge hurdle for Spartak to overcome, but it is understood that a meeting is set for tomorrow to renegotiate the financial aspects.

If successful, Alderweireld could be looking at a four-year deal with the Russian giants, who are due to play their Europa League qualifiers later this month.

Spartak have already gone through four Premier League games unbeaten in the new season, and are leading the table on goal difference ahead of FK Rostov.

The 24-year-old had been subject to interest from Liverpool and Norwich City this summer, while reports of a bid from Tottenham Hotspur were brushed aside earlier this week.
