Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that the club's Portuguese full-back Fabio Coentrao has formally asked to leave the club.

It is no secret that Coentrao is unsettled at the Santiago Bernabeu and has been very vocal about being at odds with the "hostile" treatment he feels he is receiving at the club.

But now it appears that Coentrao has already taken action and has informed his manager about his desire to leave the Spanish capital.

"Coentrao has told Real Madrid he wants to go, so he will no longer be in the squad and he will not be playing against Levante", Ancelotti said in a press conference.

Coentrao made a total 30 appearances for Los Blancos last term under the watch of ex-manager Jose Mourinho, before the tactician moved on to Chelsea.

The Portuguese left-back has a contract with Real Madrid until 2017. He has been linked with Tottenham Hotspur this summer, with speculation surrounding the former Benfica man serving as a makeweight in a deal to sign Gareth Bale.
