Liverpool are believed to have turned down an approach from Napoli for defender Martin Skrtel.

According to the BBC, Liverpool were contacted by Rafael Benitez's men on Tuesday, with the Italians offering a deal worth around £10m to take the Slovakian to Serie A.

There has been much speculation linking Skrtel with once again teaming up with Benitez, but Napoli had still to make an approach.

But if that has now indeed come, then the Azzurri have had their interest rebuffed.

Skrtel expressed his unhappiness with his situation at Liverpool at the end of last season, having seen Jamie Carragher preferred by manager Brendan Rodgers.

And despite Carragher's retirement, Rodgers has brought in Kolo Toure, who has ensured Skrtel continues to warm the bench.

Liverpool have also seen Sebastian Coates sidelined with a serious knee injury, which may also have influenced their thinking on Skrtel.
