Athletic Bilbao look to have been rendered powerless to prevent the departure of midfielder Ander Herrera after Manchester United moved to activate the player's release clause.

Herrera has been the subject of an offer from the English champions, which Athletic Bilbao rejected, telling Manchester United they must meet the 24-year-old's release clause if they wish to acquire him.

That sum stands at €36m and the Spanish side have been fearful that Manchester United will deposit that amount at La Liga headquarters, activating the clause.

And according to Spanish daily El Mundo Deportivo, that is happening, with the Red Devils agreeing to pay Herrera's clause amount.

Manchester United are also pushing to complete the signing of Marouane Fellaini from Everton, with a £24m offer thought to have been accepted by the Toffees.

And the Belgium international could soon be joined by Herrera at Old Trafford.
