Manchester United's inability to complete the signing of Fabio Coentrao is believed to have left the wantaway defender extremely disappointed.

The Portuguese had been keen on leaving Real Madrid in the summer and the La Liga giants had seemingly no problem in allowing him that.

He was even tipped as being the cherry-on-top in the Gareth Bale deal with Tottenham Hotspur, but it came to nought.

And the Red Devils themselves failed at the last minute in their bid to take Coentrao away on a loan deal, in what was a chaotic transfer deadline day.

According to Record, Coentrao, currently linked up with Portugal's national team, is understood to have been left heavily upset at the move breaking down.

Manchester United boss David Moyes had previously lost out on Athletic Bilbao's Ander Herrera, but still managed to get his former Everton midfielder Marrouane Fellaini.

However, with Toffees left-back Leighton Baines out of the reckoning for a transfer, Coentrao had emerged as a potential target at Old Trafford.

Despite being out-of-favour at Real Madrid, the 25-year-old was a hot property, with his former club Benfica, Monaco and Napoli joining Chelsea with an interest.

Coentrao has spent two years with Real Madrid so far, and is under contract until 2017.
