Marco van Ginkel's agent has revealed that his client has a sense of profound sadness after injuring a cruciate ligament in his knee, which will lead to a layoff of between six and nine months.

The midfielder, who only joined Chelsea this summer from Vitesse, picked up the injury against Swindon Town in the League Cup on Tuesday and it has thrown his entire season, not to mention participation in next summer's World Cup, into doubt.

And Van Ginkel's agent has provided an insight into how his client is feeling at this difficult time.

"This is a terrible setback for the boy", Rob Jansen told the Algemeen Dagblad.

"More than six months seems forever. The question is whether he is still in the picture for the Dutch national team.

"The boy now feels mostly sadness.

"He has to go through it and focus on Chelsea at the moment."

Van Ginkel is now set to be in a race against time to return to action before the end of the season in an attempt to make his case for inclusion in Louis van Gaal's Holland squad for the trip to Brazil.
