Former Norwich City target Ola Toivonen is potentially just over a week away from a decision on a contract renewal at PSV Eindhoven, after a summer of failed moves.

The midfielder had been close to signing for Norwich with both clubs having agreed things in principle, but rejected the same in hopes of luring "a bigger club".

PSV have since been hoping to tie Toivonen down to a contract extension – his current deal expires next year – and there has at last been positive movement.

The news comes despite Toivonen's agent claiming in August that the Swede could run down his contract in opposition to PSV's selling tactics.

Toivonen was today quoted by the Eindhovens Dagblad as saying: "There is no problem between the club and myself. The media make it sound a little bigger than it all is.

"I'll first play the international matches with Sweden, then I will take a decision [on the contract extension]."

Toivonen was initially in danger of being frozen out at PSV if he did not secure a transfer this summer, but has since returned to favour.

He has made nine league appearances so far this season and even scored the opener in PSV's 2-1 victory over RKC Waalwijk at the weekend.

Sweden are due to play Austria and Germany in the next round of World Cup qualifiers with still a chance to earn a playoff berth in Group C.
