Pepe Reina's father has revealed that his son was in talks to join Barcelona this summer, but those best-laid plans were scuppered when Victor Valdes decided to stay at the Camp Nou.

Valdes informed Barcelona last season that he would not extend his contract at the club, which is due to run out next summer.

It had been thought he would go before then and Barcelona seemingly moved to line up Reina, who was at Liverpool at the time.

The goalkeeper's father, Miguel Reina, told Minuto116: "A few months ago Pepe was in talks with Barcelona and had reached an agreement and was scheduled to go.

"But then, Victor Valdes did not make the transfer."

Reina was subsequently loaned to Napoli for the entire current campaign, with Liverpool bringing in Belgian Simon Mignolet as his replacement.

It remains to be seen what the future will hold for the Spain international from next summer onwards.
