Belgium coach Marc Wilmots has admitted that he would be delighted if Kevin De Bruyne swapped Chelsea for Schalke in the January transfer window, but feels the overriding thing is that the attacking midfielder should play regularly.

De Bruyne has slipped out of the starting eleven picture at Chelsea and has even been struggling to make manager Jose Mourinho's squad on match days.

Such a situation is concerning for Wilmots, who wants the 22-year-old playing week in week out in preparation for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

And so to the Belgium coach's mind, De Bruyne needs to address that issue, with Schalke, a club Wilmots enjoyed a long association with, a solution which would meet with his blessing.

"I want De Bruyne to play on a regular basis", Wilmots said.

"Everyone knows the qualities De Bruyne has.

"Schalke? The club obviously have a special place in my heart and I would love it if a player with those qualities played for Schalke."

De Bruyne does have Bundesliga experience, having spent last season on loan at Werder Bremen, a stint deemed so successful he quickly collected an army of German sides bidding for his signature this summer.

The former Genk man chose to stay put at Chelsea though, aiming to establish himself under Mourinho.
