Premier League leaders Liverpool are keeping a close watch on Sevilla central midfielder Ivan Rakitic, ahead of a possible January transfer attempt.

The Reds are keen to bolster their midfield options next month, particularly in light of Steven Gerrard being out through injury, combined with the inspirational skipper growing no younger.

According to El Correo de Andalucia, Liverpool sent talent spotters to take in Rakitic's performance for Sevilla against Villarreal at the weekend.

They would not have been disappointed with what they saw as the Croatian international created both his side's goals in a 2-1 win.

Rakitic has been an important force for Los Rojiblancos so far this season, scoring seven goals in La Liga and providing eight assists.

The 25-year-old has a contract which runs until 2015 at Sevilla and cost the Spanish side a bargain €2.5m to sign from Schalke in 2011.

Sevilla coach Unai Emery is unlikely to be pleased at the prospect of losing Rakitic in mid-season, but an attractive offer from Liverpool could prove irresistible for the club.
