Spanish giants Atletico Madrid are looking closely at Basel winger Mohamed Salah, who has been strongly linked with Liverpool in recent days.

The Egypt international has become one of the hottest properties in European football following his impressive performances for Basel, helping the Swiss champions reach the semi-finals of last season's Europa League and chipping in as they beat Chelsea home and away in this term's Champions League group stage.

Such is Liverpool's interest in Salah that the winger's countryman, former Tottenham striker Mido, has claimed a deal to take him to Anfield is all but done.

However, interest from La Liga heavyweights Atletico Madrid may be able to throw a spanner in the works.

According to the Basler Zeitung, the Spanish side have taken a keen interest in Salah and considering moving formally into the race to acquire his services.

Atletico Madrid join Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Bayer Leverkusen and Wolfsburg in all taking a close look at Salah, although Los Rojiblancos' interest appears more concrete.

It remains to be seen how Salah views his future, though the winger is nothing if not ambitious, and has expressed a preference for a switch to England.

He said last month: "I hope that I'll play in England someday.

"I want to play for one of the best teams in the world someday."
