Jermain Defoe's long-speculated move to Major League Soccer could be close at hand with Toronto FC poised to seal a deal before the start of next week.

According to the Toronto Star, a deal for Tottenham Hotspur's Defoe is in its final stages and the England forward is expected to be unveiled on Monday.

Toronto had been on Defoe's case since last year though they had briefly turned to Chelsea striker Samuel Eto'o, with Spurs seemingly unwilling at the time.

However, Defoe is understood to be nearing a switch now, which will see him earn a reported salary of £90,000 a week.

While no confirmation has yet been given by either club, Toronto did give a teaser of sorts, which has sent media on both sides of the Atlantic into a tizzy.

The Canadian MLS outfit put up a message on their website with the words "It's a bloody big deal" and the date of 13th January alongside it.

It has fuelled speculation of Defoe's capture, while the Spurs striker is expected to be loaned immediately back to White Hart Lane.

Defoe will be expected to officially become a Toronto player by the time the regular MLS season kicks off in March later this year.
