The FA have brought charges against West Bromwich Albion striker Nicolas Anelka for his 'quenelle' gesture during a game against West Ham last month.

The news comes less than 24 hours after West Brom shirt sponsors Zoopla announcing they will withdraw their patronage over the striker's actions and continued squad inclusion.

Anelka's gesture as part of a goal celebration is symbolically viewed as a Nazi salute in reverse, and has been condemned by anti-discriminatory groups.

And an FA statement today read: "The FA has charged Nicolas Anelka following an incident that occurred during the West Ham United versus West Bromwich Albion fixture at the Boleyn Ground on 28th December, 2013.

"It is alleged that, in the 40th minute of the fixture, Anelka made a gesture which was abusive and/or indecent and/or insulting and/or improper, contrary to FA Rule E3[1].

"It is further alleged that this is an aggravated breach, as defined in FA Rule E3[2], in that it included a reference to ethnic origin and/or race and/or religion or belief.

"Anelka has until 6pm on 23rd January, 2014 to respond to the charge."

Frenchman Anelka had denied holding racist or anti-semitic beliefs in the days following the incident, and claimed the gesture was in tribute to his friend and comedian Dieudonne M'bala M'bala, who is a famous user.
