Nicolas Anelka is "considering his options" after being charged by the FA for his 'quenelle' gesture, West Bromwich Albion revealed today.

Anelka was today charged with an "an aggravated breach" of FA rules through his gesture – the quenelle is a Nazi salute in reverse and is seen by many as anti-semitic.

The Frenchman had previously denied being racist or anti-semitic, claiming the gesture was mainly "anti-system", though West Brom's shirt sponsors were clearly not convinced.

And following the FA's decision today, West Brom have conveyed the striker's position so far.

"West Bromwich Albion has noted The FA’s charge against Nicolas Anelka regarding the gesture he made after scoring his first goal against West Ham on 28th December," a club statement read.

"Anelka has received a 34-page document explaining the allegations against him and informing him that he has until 6pm on Thursday to respond. The player is now considering his options.

"Under FA rules, Anelka remains available for first-team selection until The FA’s disciplinary process has reached its conclusion. Following this, the club will conclude its own internal enquiry."

West Brom sponsors Zoopla yesterday confirmed they would withdraw at the end of the season over Anelka's actions and his continued inclusion in the Baggies squad.
