The news is a blow for Borussia Dortmund, who were believed to have been given the player's assent over the move yesterday.

Only an agreement with Inter was required though Borussia Dortmund's offer of up to €7m is not deemed acceptable.

The Germans are keen to sign a defender this winter, given their injury worries, and Ranocchia has been slightly out-of-favour in recent weeks.

He started the season on a productive run, but has featured just once in his last four Serie A games for Inter.

The 25-year-old has earned himself 12 Italy caps, and any hopes of securing a World Cup berth will hinge on whether Inter allow him a move to Germany or give him more games.

Ranocchia has spent all his club career in Italy, having previously played for Genoa and Bari after graduating from boyhood club Atletico Arezzo.
