Roma are taking action to ensure Manchester United cannot tempt Mehdi Benatia away this coming summer, after the English champions were linked with a swoop for the defender.

According to Italian daily Corriere della Sera, the Giallorossi have been so worried by the speculation that they have scheduled a meeting with Benatia's representatives.

Roma sporting director Walter Sabatini is eyeing an improvement to the player's current terms, on a contract which runs until 2018.

It remains to be seen if Benatia will be tempted by Roma's proposal, or eyes the exit door with talk of Manchester United.

The 26-year-old joined Roma in 2013 from Udinese, having been dogged by links to English clubs before eventually heading elsewhere in Serie A.

Benatia represents Morocco at international level and has accumulated 31 caps for the African country to date.
