Wealthy Ligue 1 club Monaco are looking closely at Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho, amid serious interest from Manchester United in the 21-year-old.

Manchester United are advanced in their push to bag the energetic midfielder, with some reports even claiming a deal is all but done.

However, the Red Devils could yet face late opposition from Monaco, who would have little trouble meeting William's €45m buy-out clause, leaving the player with a straight choice between a move to Old Trafford or the Stade Louis II.

Monaco, who have close connections with William's agent Jorge Mendes, are on the lookout for a physical midfielder and believe the young Sporting Lisbon starlet fits the bill.

Scouts from the principality club have made several trips to watch the Portugal international in action and have filed positive reports.

According to French magazine Le 10 Sport, Monaco have not yet held concrete talks with Sporting Lisbon over William, but are considering their next move.

Monaco recruited from Portugal last summer, signing James Rodriguez and Joao Moutinho from FC Porto and utilising their contacts with Mendes to good effect.

Claudio Ranieri's men would also be able to offer William Champions League football, something Manchester United look unlikely to be able to match.
