Roma will hope to hand Mehdi Benatia a new, improved contract in response to some of Europe's top clubs circling around the Moroccan defender.

The 27-year-old defender joined Roma from Udinese for a transfer fee of €13.5m last summer and signed a five-year contract with the club.

Benatia’s performances at the heart of Roma’s defence this season have been impressive and have caught the eye of several European giants.

After the departure of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, Manchester United are looking for a experienced central defender this summer and have identified Benatia as one of their potential targets.

Bayern Munich, Chelsea and even recently crowned Premier League champions Manchester City might rival the Red Devils for the Moroccan’s signature, according to French sports daily L’Equipe.

With such powerhouse clubs speculated to be interested in their defensive mainstay, Roma need to act quickly and offer an improved contract to Benatia.

The central defender has made 32 league appearances for Roma this season and has even scored five goals for the Giallorossi.
