New Monaco coach Leonardo Jardim has refused to take up the option of signing Ashley Cole this summer.

The former England left-back is on the verge of leaving Chelsea after failing to agree to a new contract with the club. The existing deal expires at the end of this month.

Monaco were favourites to land the 33-year-old this summer and it is believed that a deal was all but agreed, with Cole having visited the principality.

However, Jardim, who was appointed as Monaco’s new manager last week, has decided to veto the club’s move for the left-back, according to French outlet Mercato365.

The Portuguese is believed to be more interested in other targets and passed up the opportunity to sign Cole.

Cole announced his retirement from international football last month after he was omitted from England’s World Cup squad by Three Lions manager Roy Hodgson.
