Liverpool are rekindling their interest in Belgium defender Toby Alderweireld, a player they looked closely at signing last summer.
The Reds were consistently linked with Alderweireld in the 2013 summer transfer window, but kept their powder dry and watched the defender move from Ajax to Atletico Madrid.
However, Alderweireld has found cementing a spot in Diego Simeone's starting eleven to be a tough ask at the Vicente Calderon and finished the season with just 12 La Liga appearances under his belt.
The centre-back could well be on the move from the Spanish champions for the right price and Liverpool are pondering making a move to take him to Anfield, according to Sky Italia.
Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is well aware of the need to strengthen a backline which leaked 50 goals in the Premier League last season and was widely seen as costing the club the title.

Alderweireld has been clear over his desire to play in the Premier League in the past and may jump at the chance to move to Liverpool.
His contract with Atletico Madrid runs until the summer of 2017.
