Schalke sporting director Horst Heldt has insisted that the Ruhr giants will not be selling defender Benedikt Howedes to Manchester City.

The English champions have been linked with making a move for the Schalke captain, who is currently part of Joachim Low's Germany squad at the World Cup in Brazil.

But for Heldt, Howedes leaving is simply an option which is not on the table at Schalke, while he also insists that the club have not fielded an enquiry for the 26-year-old.

"There is no formal enquiry", Heldt explained to Bild.

"Moreover, Benedikt is not for sale."

The Schalke deal-maker did suggest however that if the defender wishes to embark upon a new challenge, there will be time for him to do just that when his contract with the club runs out.

"A career plan is always a good thing, but until 2016, there is still plenty of time.

"Perhaps next summer his plan will say Schalke forever."
