Inter Milan have reached an understanding with Portuguese super agent Jorge Mendes for the transfer of Real Madrid full-back Fabio Coentrao.

Real Madrid have been trying to offload the 27-year-old, who has been linked with a move to Manchester United in previous years.

While Los Blancos were finding it hard to find a buyer for the Portuguese international, the Nerazzurri have secretly made an arrangement to sign Coentrao this summer.

According to Italian daily Corriere dello Sport, the Inter sporting director, Piero Ausilio, has agreed a deal in principle with the Mendes, the player’s agent, to sign his client during the current transfer window.

The Nerazzurri have been trying to recruit a left-back this summer and the Portuguese international is believed to be their choice for next season.

While the Real Madrid hierarchy have been trying to sell Coentrao, Rafael Benitez is yet to give his green light to the deal, so the full-back’s transfer is believed to be hinging on the decision of Los Blancos' coach.

With Marcelo believed to be the first choice full-back for Real Madrid, Coentrao is unlikely to be one of the first names in Benitez’s team sheet next season.

However, it remains to be seen whether the Real Madrid coach decides to sell the player without signing a replacement in the final stretch of the transfer window.
