Former Barcelona and Manchester City youth player Gai Assulin is training with Rangers, according to STV.

The former Israel Under-21 international has been without a club since leaving Real Mallorca in the summer and is on the lookout for a new side to rejuvenate his career.

He has been pictured training with Mark Warburton’s Rangers side ahead of their clash against Queen of South on Saturday at Ibrox. He is hoping to win a contract with the Scottish Championship leaders after a trial period.

Assulin was termed ‘the new Lionel Messi’ during his time at the Barcelona academy, but he left the club without making a senior appearance for the Catalan giants. He did work under current Blaugrana boss Luis Enrique in the reserve side and made 65 appearances.

His move to Manchester City in 2010 also failed to work out and he left the club without playing any first team football for the Citizens, following a brief loan spell at Brighton.

Assulin returned to Spain with Racing Santander and had a loan spell at Hercules. He has been a free agent since leaving Real Mallorca in August.

The 24-year-old will be hoping that he manages to impress Warburton and earn a contract at Rangers, in order to restart his career in Scotland.
