Leeds United's hopes of signing Sunderland midfielder Liam Bridcutt are in the balance, it has been claimed.

Whites head coach Steve Evans had been aiming to sign Bridcutt on loan before Tuesday evening's 1-0 win over Cardiff City, but the deal was held up.

Evans explained he was waiting on Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce signing the deal off with his club's board, but despite the Leeds boss planning to speak to the Black Cats manager yesterday, no loan has yet materialised.

Now, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post, other Championship clubs are sniffing around a loan deal for Bridcutt.

And as a result, Leeds' acquisition of the former Chelsea midfielder is hanging in the balance.

Evans is desperate to strengthen his side and had identified Bridcutt as an ideal reinforcement.

But if the Whites miss out on the midfielder then the former Rotherham United manager will be forced to go back to the drawing board with his plans to sign another player for the centre of the park.

Bridcutt has not played for Sunderland this season.
