Rangers are discussing a contract termination package with Joey Barton which could see his salary paid up until the January transfer window, at which time he would be able to join a new club.

Barton was until recently serving a club suspension following a training ground row with team-mate Andy Halliday, which the Gers extended.

He returned to training with the club last week with the Under-20s, but it emerged on Tuesday he has now been signed off with stress and has stayed away from Rangers.

Now Rangers and Barton's representatives are in talks to terminate his contract, according to the Herald Scotland.

It has been suggested that the Gers could agree to pay up Barton's contract until January, to allow him to train with another club before the window swings open in the new year, when he could then sign.

Barton joined Rangers in the summer transfer window after the expiry of his contract with Burnley, signing a two-year deal reportedly worth £20,000 per week.

He struggled to make an impact however and was off the pace when Rangers collapsed to a 5-1 defeat away at Celtic, a game which could ultimately prove to be his last for the club.
