Liverpool representatives have used the opportunity of talks with Sporting Lisbon over terminating Lazar Markovic's loan agreement to speak to the Portuguese side about signing William Carvalho, according to A Bola.

Reds winger Markovic joined Sporting Lisbon on loan for the season in the summer, but the deal was cancelled by mutual consent after he failed to make his mark in Portugal, with the Serbian joining Hull City for the remainder of the season on Monday.

Besides taking the decision on Markovic, Liverpool officials were also in Lisbon to talk about the possibility of roping in William, who has been a long-term target for Arsenal.

The Merseyside giants are currently going through a rough patch, having won just once in their last six outings in all competitions, and have identified the 24-year-old defensive midfielder as a possible recruit.

It has been suggested that Liverpool would need to shell out in excess of €30m to sign the Portugal international, whose present contract with Sporting Lisbon runs until 2020.
