Former Hibernian forward Tam McManus does not believe Steven Gerrard will be given the task of overhauling Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership standings if he takes over at Rangers.

Liverpool legend Gerrard has held talks with Rangers about taking over at Ibrox, with the Gers set to part ways with incumbent manager Graeme Murty at the end of the season.

Rangers have struggled to compete with Celtic since their return to the top flight and went down 5-0 at the Bhoys on Sunday in another display to forget.

McManus thinks the gap to Celtic is too big to realistically ask Gerrard to make Rangers champions and he believes the Liverpool legend would have a different remit.

He wrote on Twitter: "To be honest with you 10 in a row [for Celtic] looks a certainty and most Rangers fans would acknowledge that too now.

"Celtic miles ahead.

"Gerrard’s remit would be to finish 2nd/compete with Celtic i.e. not get horsed 4s and 5s.

"With Rangers' budget advantage over rest surely that’s achievable?"

Rangers are currently in a battle to finish second in the Premiership with three games left to play. The Gers sit in third, three points behind second placed Aberdeen and ahead of fourth placed Hibernian on goal difference.
