John Hartson feels that Steven Gerrard could not help but make Rangers a better side, however he cautioned that staying at Liverpool could put the Reds legend in line to succeed Jurgen Klopp.
The Liverpool legend has held talks with the Scottish giants about taking over at Ibrox at the end of the season with current manager Graeme Murty's contract coming to an end.
Having seen the Glasgow-based side slump to their fourth defeat of the season against their fiercest rivals Celtic, Hartson believes that things could not get any worse for the Gers than they are at the moment if Gerrard was in charge.
With an important part of the Rangers project being to match the standards of the Hoops, the 43-year-old feels that Gerrard should be a positive appointment for the club, who could only take them forward and not backwards.
However, the former Arsenal man feels that the final decision will rest on the man himself and whether he could be eyeing succeding Klopp.

"It's up to Steven whether he wants to wait another four years and work with the young players at Liverpool", Hartson was quoted as saying by the Herald Scotland.
"Maybe he might get an opportunity to manage the Liverpool first team, there are no guarantees, if Klopp decides to go away.
"I see it as a wonderful opportunity.
"He can only take them up, he can't make them any worse."
