Former Rangers striker Steven Thompson has questioned Steven Gerrard’s decision to shift to a back three against Motherwell and is sure that they will revert to a back four against FC Ufa.

Gerrard’s men were held to a 3-3 draw against Motherwell after an injury time equaliser from Peter Hartley helped the hosts salvage a point from the pulsating encounter in north Lanarkshire.

Thompson, who represented the Gers from 2003 to 2006, was quick to point out the fact that the Steelmen exploited Gerrard’s new approach during the 3-3 draw at Fir Park on Sunday.

The former Scotland international also added that he expects Rangers to revert to a back four for the second leg away from home against FC Ufa in the Europa League playoff round clash on Thursday.

“They're still undefeated and have taken a point at a difficult away venue. It's not as if it's a disaster”, Thompson told BBC Scotland.

“But Gerrard will have a warning for his team: if they defend like that when they face FC Ufa in Russia on Thursday, they will be knocked out of the Europa League.

“Their 1-0 first-leg lead will not be enough.

"I think you'll find they will return to a back four for that game, he added.

Rangers will travel to Russia to face FC Ufa in the playoff tie before the derby against Celtic on Sunday in the Scottish Premiership.
