Current Rangers assistant boss and former Leeds United star Gary McAllister has revealed his view that former Whites full-backs Mel Sterland and Tony Dorigo could excel in the modern era.
McAllister played alongside both Sterling and Dorigo at Elland Road, with the trio part of the Leeds title winning team of 1992.
The full-back position has evolved in recent years, with full-backs expected to get up and down the flank and contribute in the attacking third, as well as taking care of their defensive duties.
McAllister, who was explaining his top team on Rangers TV, believes that both Sterland and Dorigo had modern full-back attributes and lauded their talents.
"I think in today's game where full-back are asked to get high up the pitch, deliver balls into the box and be the legs on the side, Mel Sterland was a fantastic right full-back", McAllister said.
"His delivery in the final third, particularly in the team at Leeds that won the league, which I played in, 90 per cent of Lee Chapman's assists were Mel Sterland's.
"Fantastic record from the penalty spot as well, scored a few goals in his time. But purely from an attacking sense, he was very modern.
"Another Leeds United team-mate in that Championship winning side, Tony Dorigo, lighting quick. He was fantastic on recovery, covering centre-backs and stuff", McAllister stressed.
"Although he was small at the back post, he'd never, ever get outjumped; had a decent leap.
"He was outstanding.
"Both could play today."
Sterland turned out for Leeds from 1989 until 1994, while Dorigo pulled on a white shirt from 1991 until 1997.
McAllister departed Elland Road a year earlier, in 1996, and made the move to Coventry City.
He enjoyed an Indian summer with Liverpool, from 2000 until 2002, winning a cup treble comprising the League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Cup in 2001.
