Former Leeds United star Gary McAllister thinks that David Batty was underrated and his quality only really known by those who played with him.

Batty and McAllister formed part of the midfield in 1992 when Leeds won the league title, with Gordon Strachan and Gary Speed the other members of a fearsome group.

Batty won caps for England, notching 42, and notably featured in the 1998 World Cup, while he also turned out for Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United at club level.

But McAllister thinks that Batty was underrated, with only those who played alongside the tigerish midfielder truly appreciating how good he was.

"David Batty, an outstanding footballer and probably the most underrated player I played with", McAllister said on Rangers TV, when picking his top team.

"Although he got several caps for England and played in World Cups, he is a player who, unless you play with him, you don't really get to know how good he is."

McAllister played alongside Batty during the midfielder's first spell at Elland Road, with a second spell starting from 1998, when he rejoined from Newcastle.

Batty's second stint at Leeds lasted until 2004, when an injury against former side Newcastle proved to be the event which would draw the curtain on his career.
